PERTH REGIMENT CRACKS OPEN THE GOTHIC LINE
August 30 – September 1, 1944
Initial discoveries of lightly manned defences and an intact roadway an anti-tank ditch led to a decision by Major-General BM Hoffmeister, OC 5th Canadian
Armoured Division (5 CAD) and Allied staff to cancel the set-piece attack and to immediately "gate-crash" the forward defences of the Gothic Line.
On the evening of August 30, the Perth Regiment, 11th Canadian Infantry
Brigade (5CAD) became the first unit to pierce the Gothic Line when 'D'
Company
captured Point 111 with a bayonet charge followed by 'A' coy
outflanking and seizing Point 147.
These initial gains were exploited on August 31 by units of the two Canadian divisions, 1st Infantry and 5th Armoured. Although intense artillery fire prevented
the Perths from joining the British Columbia Dragoons (BCD) of 5th Canadian Armoured Brigade (5CAB) the tank regiment boldly adavanced and seized Point
204 the Gothic Line's lynch pin positon. That evening, the Perths and Lord Strathcona's (5CAB) tanks releived the BCD and held Point 204 against three
determined counterattacks by 4th Parachute (Fallschirmjäger) Regiment supported by 26th Panzer Regiment's tanks.
Three Perths were recognized for their valour at Point 204: LT-Col. W.W.Reid was awarded the Distinguished Service Order, Sergeant K.M. 'Blackie' Rowe,
Distinguished Conduct Medal, and Private Roy D. Saunders, the
Military Medal. |
IL REGGIMENTO PERTH FA BRECCIA NELLA LINEA GOTICA
30 Agosto – 1 Settembre 1944La iniziale scoperta di difese superficialmente guarnite e di un ponte stradale intatto sopra una trincea anticarro portarono alla decisione da parte del General Maggiore
B.M. Hoffmeister e dello staff Alleato di cancellare l'attacco previsto e di "sfondare" immediatamente le difese avanzate della Linea Gotica. La sera del 30 agosto, il
Reggimento Perth 11 Brigata Fanteria, divenne la prima unità a infrangere la Linea Gotica, quando la Compagnia 'D' catturò il punto 111 con un assalto all'arma bianca
fiancheggiata dalla "A" Coy e assediando il punto 147.
Queste iniziali conquiste furono messe a frutto il 31 agosto da unità della 1^ Divisione Fanteria Canadese e dalla 5^ Divisione Corazzata Canadese. Nonostante un
intenso fuoco di artiglieria impedisse al Perth di ricongiungersi con la British Columbia Dragoons della 5^ Brigata Corazzata Canadese, il reggimento carri
audacemente avanzò ed assediò il punto 204, la posizione perno della Linea Gotica. Quella sera, i carri armati del Perth e del Lord Strathcona's (5^ Brigata Corazzata
Canadese) rilevarono la British Columbia Dragoons e tennero il Punto 204 contro tre decisi contrattacchi del 4° Reggimento Paracadutisti (Fallschirmjäger) supportati
dai carri armati del 26° reggimento Panzer.
Per il valore mostrato al Punto 204 il Tenente Colonnello W.W. Reid fu insignito della Distinguished Service Order durante questa azione; il Sergente K.M.
"Blackie " Rowe, della Distinguished Conduct Medal ed il Soldato Roy D. Saunders della Military Medal. |
